Why the same litre costs wildly different amounts
Ask two drivers in two countries what they pay at the pump and the answers can differ by a factor of three or more. The crude oil is traded on the same world market, so the raw product is not the explanation. The difference is everything that happens afterwards: fuel duty, value-added tax, regional subsidies, distribution distances, refinery capacity and the margin local retailers are able to hold.
In several European countries, tax is the single largest component of the price on the board — larger than the fuel itself. In oil-producing states the opposite is true, and the pump price is deliberately suppressed as a matter of policy. That is why a price comparison across borders is really a comparison of tax and subsidy regimes as much as it is a comparison of energy markets, and it is why we show local prices in local currency by default and convert only when you ask for it.
Where the numbers come from
Prices are collected through an automated pipeline that pulls from official and institutional sources rather than from user submissions. The data set is refreshed on a daily cycle, and currency conversions are recalculated as exchange rates move so that a comparison between two cities is made at a consistent moment in time.
Each city page shows the local price for gasoline, diesel, LPG and EV charging where that information is available, plus the regional context that makes the figure interpretable: the country it belongs to and the currency it is quoted in. Where a source does not publish a value for a particular fuel, we leave the field empty rather than estimate it. The FAQ documents the sources and the update cycle in more detail.
How to read a fuel price
Prices are indicative, not a quote
A published average for a city tells you what drivers there are paying in general terms. It is not a promise about the station at the end of your street, where the price can be several percent higher or lower on any given day. Treat the figures as a planning tool rather than a guarantee.
Watch the currency, not just the number
A price that looks cheap in a foreign currency can move substantially once the exchange rate is applied, and rates drift independently of fuel markets. When you compare two countries, compare the converted figures — that is the number that actually describes the cost of driving there.
Fuel types are not interchangeable
Diesel, gasoline, LPG and electricity have different energy content per unit, so an LPG price that looks dramatically lower than gasoline is not automatically the cheaper way to cover the same distance. The trip cost calculator exists precisely because a straightforward per-unit comparison can mislead.
